Electron Transport Chain
Electron Transport chain
The Electron Transport chain (ETC) is the final stage of cellular respiration. The ETC is found along the inner membrane of the mitochondria. This is where all the NADHs and the FADH2 come to drop off their hydrogen to transfer the protons and electrons. The NADHs drop off the hydrogens at the first component of the ETC which is NADH dehydrogenase. The protons of the hydrogens are pumped into the inner membrane space while the electrons move onto the next component of the ETC, coenzyme Q. At coenzyme Q is where the FADH2 has its hydrogens taken away. The protons are again pumped into the inner membrane space while the electrons move onto the next component, cytochrome b-ca complex. At this complex protons continue to pump through and into the inner membrane space and electron move onto the cytochrome oxidase complex. This complex also allows protons to be pumped through and into the inner membrane space but while this complex does this it also creates water. Once The NADHs and FADH2 have given up its electrons they go back to be reused in the whole process all over again. Once all the proton have been pumped into the inner membrane space you have a higher concentration of proton which creates a chemical gradient that drives the production of ATP through a process called chemiosmosis. The hydrogens can’t pass through the membrane wall so they are forced to go to travel through the proton channel that is associated with the enzyme ATPase. As the protons travel through the channel it causes the synthesis of ATP from ADP. This is where you get most of your ATP made throughout all of cellular respiration.

Teaching resources
Below are a few teaching resources that one can use to help reinforce ETC for students
Student worksheet/activity
Received from L.Philips
Can use the sheet below just as a worksheet to teach ETC or use as an activity where students need to demonstrate what occurs in the ETC using candy, coins etc.

Assessment
Help reinforce and check student understanding can conduct the quiz as a class or allows students to have laptops or time in computer lab to do this quiz. Can give feedback as students write quiz to ensure no student is left behind. Also there is a link for a animation that can be used as reinforcement for when you have finished teaching ETC.
