LAC Operon Model
To help students' understanding of the LAC operon and the negative feedback that occurs, creating models may be effective. The following is a model created with materials that can be found at the dollar store and functions as the LAC operon would. Below are the materials needed as well as the instructions for construction of the model.

Although this model represents the LAC Operon, teachers could have some students create a model for the TRP Operon as well, using the same general steps. Another extension that teachers might add to the model is creating a model of RNA polymerase (out of an extra-large styrofoam ball), that has the shape of the base and the sugar-phosphate backbone cut out of it. The bases and backbone would then fit, like a key, into the RNA polymerase and the polymerase could 'copy' the genes, until it hits the operator repressor (the two medium styrofoam balls glued together). There are also follow up questions that are included with the model outline that could be used as is, or expanded upon to consolidate the activity.
Eukaryote Regulation
It is vital for students to understand the connection between DNA structure, function and protein coding and the regulation of genes within humans. The following assignment helps to demonstrate the whole process of eukaryote gene regulation and the importance of understanding it within the medical world.

Gene Regulation Quiz
After regulation is introduced, a quiz would be ideal to assess what the students have learned and their level of understanding. I would have them complete a quiz after the concept of prokaryote gene regulation has been covered, as well as following eukaryote gene regulation. Below is a quiz for prokaryote gene regulation.
